The Thames Path

For riverside strolls, it’s hard to beat the famous Thames Path. Stretching for over 180 miles from Gloucestershire to London along one of the UK’s most famous rivers, this long-distance footpath promises plenty of opportunities for countryside walks in Berkshire throughout the year – although it’s especially lovely in flower-filled spring. What’s more, the pathway along the side of the river enjoys relatively flat gradients and can be picked up and left at countless points along the way, making it a very accessible option for most. A particularly picturesque section runs alongside Pangbourne Meadow, just a short drive from Donnington Grove, and comes into life in spring when countless flowers pepper the surrounding fields.

Windsor Great Park

Take a walk through the historic grounds of Windsor Great Park for one of the top walks in Berkshire countryside. On the border of Berkshire and Surrey, this renowned park covers more than 2,000 hectares and is steeped in 1,000 years of history. Needless to say, if you’re looking for relaxing ambles or fast-paced hikes this spring, the park accommodates all levels of fitness with an abundance of space and trails. For the best introduction, the 2.5-mile Long Walk follows a tree-lined avenue (first created by King Charles II) down the centre of the park towards Windsor Castle. Enjoy the incredible backdrop of the world’s oldest and biggest occupied castle and the sprawling deer park views and stop off for a picnic en route to make your walk all the more special.

North Wessex Downs

Berkshire is home to part of the beautiful North Wessex Downs National Landscape. On the doorstep of Donnington Grove, this large area of chalk downland makes for the perfect backdrop to walks in Berkshire countryside. One of the best routes to put a spring in your step, a 4.5-mile circular route runs from Old Burghclere to Ladle Hill and rewards walkers with 360-degree panoramas across the surrounding landscapes. Take your time strolling to the top and enjoy the vistas overlooking Beacon Hill, Highclere Estate, Watership Down, Sydmonton Estate and more. This route is hilly and follows relatively uneven terrain, so is ideal for those looking for a bit more of a challenge.
